What is a Tooth Extraction?

If you have teeth that are damaged beyond repair, you may need a tooth extraction. Our goal at PRECiDENT is to avoid tooth extractions as much as possible. But there are times when the damage to the tooth is too great to ignore. Getting your teeth pulled is a safe procedure that is crucial for keeping your mouth healthy.

Why Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

There are several reasons why you might need a tooth extraction.

Having a tooth pulled can be crucial to keeping your mouth healthy. A decaying tooth, if not treated or extracted, can lead to serious oral health problems.

You may need an extraction if you have overcrowded teeth. Overcrowded teeth can affect how your teeth align in your mouth. Overcrowded teeth can cause impacted teeth, which do not grow past gumline. We may need to pull teeth so we can make room for impacted teeth.

How is a Tooth Extracted?

There are two types of extractions: simple extraction or surgical extraction.

Simple

A simple extraction involves a local anesthesia. This numbs the area around the tooth so you only feel pressure, but no pain. Then the dentist removes the tooth.

Surgical

For surgical extractions, you will receive both a local and a intravenous anesthesia. You may also receive a general anesthesia. Your PRECiDENT specialist will make a small incision in the gum. They may need to remove some of the bone around the tooth before extracting it.
